Orbital Lasers Signs ESA’s Zero Debris Charter

October 14, 2024 – Orbital Lasers Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-Ku, Tokyo; CEO: Tadanori Fukushima), a leader in innovative space laser technology, is proud to announce its signing of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) “Zero Debris Charter.” This international initiative, spearheaded by ESA, aims to eliminate the creation of new space debris by 2030, promoting a sustainable space environment for future generations.

Commitment to the Zero Debris Charter and Orbital Lasers’ Role

The Zero Debris Charter establishes specific, measurable goals to prevent the generation of space debris by 2030. Among these objectives are reducing the likelihood of space debris generation during missions to less than 1 in 1,000 and achieving a deorbit success rate of over 99% after mission completion, including the use of external measures when necessary. These ambitious targets call for global collaboration across the international space community, with all signatories working towards a debris-free future.

Orbital Lasers, with its proprietary space laser systems, is leading the way in space debris removal technology. Space debris includes large, uncontrollable rocket bodies, defunct satellites, and smaller fragments just a few centimeters in size. By utilizing our advanced laser technology, we can remotely control the trajectory and movement of these objects, allowing for their safe removal. Furthermore, our ongoing advancements in this technology will enhance debris removal efforts and help protect on-orbit satellites and space stations.

Our commitment to the Zero Debris Charter aligns with our company mission: By powering innovative satellite laser technology, Orbital Lasers is shaping a better future for humanity and society in this great era of space exploration.” Through our efforts, Orbital Lasers is dedicated to enhancing the safety and sustainability of space, contributing to the long-term development of space utilization for humankind.
