Announcement of the establishment of Orbital Lasers Co., Ltd., a startup emerging from SKY Perfect JSAT.

Sky Perfect JSAT Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Eiichi Yonekura, hereafter Sky Perfect JSAT) aims to expand its business scope as a space industry company. To advance its laser-based space debris removal program, which originated from an internal startup initiative, Sky Perfect JSAT established “Orbital Lasers Co., Ltd.” (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Tadanori Fukushima, hereafter Orbital Lasers) on January 12, 2024.

This startup emerged from the satellite mission design and development announced in June 2020, which aims to be the world’s first1 commercial venture to remove space debris (hereafter referred to as “space debris”) using lasers, in collaboration with the RIKEN2.

In addition to its space debris removal business, Orbital Lasers will expand into providing highly accurate surface data using satellite-mounted LiDAR3 (Light Detection and Ranging) technology. This new venture aims to be the world’s first1 to offer such high-precision surface information as a private business. The satellite LiDAR business is progressing following the contract signed on January 12, 2024, between Sky Perfect JSAT and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to conduct conceptual studies on the “2023 Earth Observation Satellite Altimeter LiDAR System and Commercialization.” Orbital Lasers will take over research and development in this field, commissioned by Sky Perfect JSAT.

The new company’s planned business activities include:

Space Debris Removal Business

Detumbling Business (DTB): Developing and selling payloads to stop rotating space debris (Planned for FY2025).
Active Debris Removal (ADR) Business: Providing services to remove space debris (Planned for FY2029).
Satellite LiDAR Business

Acquiring and providing high-precision surface data using satellite LiDAR (Under planning).
Today, we rely on space-based information, such as weather forecasts and GPS, in various aspects of our daily lives, providing safety and convenience. Space-based systems also play a crucial role during disasters, helping to assess damage and provide emergency communication means. The importance of space as infrastructure supporting our economy and society will continue to grow in the future.*4

Sky Perfect JSAT has been a pioneer in space utilization for over 30 years, offering satellite communication services domestically and internationally since launching Japan’s first privately owned communication satellite, JCSAT-1, in 1989. In addition to existing services, the company launched an internal startup program in 2018 to explore new business avenues and promote sustainable space environment projects. As a result, the company has materialized two new businesses: space debris removal and satellite LiDAR.

Space debris is now regarded as an environmental issue on par with global warming and marine plastic pollution. Both Sky Perfect JSAT and Orbital Lasers are committed to addressing this issue while contributing to maintaining and improving a sustainable space environment. As space industry pioneers, they will continue to advance this mission.
